An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

This needs to happen quickly because the chance of survival decreases by 10 percent for every minute the victim remains in cardiac arrest without being defibrillated.

Which means that by the time an ambulance with an AED arrives, most victims are unlikely to survive. In an effort to shorten the time between collapse and defibrillation, AEDs are increasingly being placed in locations where people congregate, including office buildings, shopping centers, schools, airports and train stations.

Placement is happening faster in Japan than anywhere else in the world, according to Dr. Hideo Mitamura, a cardiologist who led a lengthy battle to get the rules on AEDs changed.

Until July 2004, only medical and emergency personnel were allowed to operate an AED in Japan, but now lay people can use them as well.

Unfortunately, a number of tragedies occurred before Japan brought its laws into line with international recommendations by allowing public access to AEDs.

The most publicized was the death of Prince Takamado, a member of the Imperial family who collapsed in September 2002 while playing squash. Although an ambulance arrived within eight minutes, paramedics were too late to resuscitate the prince. He almost certainly would have survived had an AED been on site, Mitamura asserts.

Another tragic case was 14-year-old Shunpei Inage, who collapsed and died after running at school in June 2004, just one month before AED use by lay people was approved. His parents set up a foundation that has successfully pushed for AEDs in every high school in Hokkaido.

Of course you don’t need money to get at the AED; it’s behind an unlocked door fitted with an alarm to discourage theft and alert bystanders that an emergency is in progress.

In Japan, lay people don’t have to have had training before using an AED in an emergency situation.

“We pushed hard that there be no requirement that laypeople be trained because the machines are very safe and easy to use,” Mitamura explained.

The AED diagnoses whether a shock is really needed and gives automated, step-by-step voice instructions. (In Japan, most AEDs speak only Japanese.)

“Japan was very late in allowing public access to AEDs,” Mitamura acknowledged, “but we went a big step ahead of Western countries by not requiring training.”

That said, it’s better to know your way around an AED before you have to use one. Let’s all get some training. We might just save a life.

Japan Day 5: It Gets Too Cold

sorry i dont think i am feeling well. i have had headache and nosebleed since last night when we came back from Tokyo Tower.

i guess it was too cold for me; also for my travelling partners because once i came down to their room to whine to them about my nose bleeding - which never happen to me... uhh... well it happened when i got kicked in the face during a taekwondo tournament about 10 years ago, and also when i was in Pasir Gudang about a couple months ago because it was too hot; but it had never been this bad that i am still having headache and feel the blood clotting in my nose wait... what is it that im trying to tell you?

oh yes, i came to my travelling partner's room to whine about my nose bleeding but then they suddenly say: "we have nosebleed to."

some people might have it badder worse, but i still want to whine; and reminding me that other people have it worse doesnt make me feel better so shut up!

today, we started off by going to Odakyu in Shinjuku because one of my travelling partner wanted to buy Meiko products.

then we once again went to Harajuku, hoping to see cosplayers but what did i see is just 2 to 3 shitty lolita wannabes...

ok thats bad.

moving on! as we i did not plan on our trip in advance; we just go anywhere we think we want to go. so we went to visit Meiji Jingu...

no we did not.

one of my partners was actually looking for a toilet so we went to see the map and the nearby train station which if you wanted to use their toilet you have got to purchase a ticket or touch your Suica Card at the entry lane which we might need to go somewhere else afterwards. so we went to take a look at the nearby information board and just found out about Meiji Jingu and i told them it is a shrine so there might be toilets inside.

so we just take a walk inside; stopped to go to the toilet, ate takoyaki which honestly i read it as kaniyaki and bought it and it actually looked really like takoyaki i stuffed one of them in my mouth and chew and uuurrrrghhhhhh~!

and we decided to go to Sumiyakiya to eat.

i dont eat octopus and squid, fyi. simple because they taste urgh to me. but i still swallowed the one i stuffed in my mouth. it is bad to spit out food.

there are children in Africa who didnt get to eat any...

i didnt bring my winter jacket because yesterday was not as cold. the weather gets colder somehow and the wind was killing me in inside out on our way to Sumiyakiya; and by the time we reached at 3.30pm...

yes, its closed. it says there that it is actually closed on Sunday and it is written there that it will reopen at 5.00pm for dinner time.

we decided not to wait because it gets colder and windy and my partner said that there is another place that we can go which is at Toranomon. as we go up from the subway near the building it gets very cold and windier? 

the wind becomes faster (i need to work on my vocab and i am too lazy to search for the right word) and my headache becomes worse and we kinda dressed ourselves like ninjas

because it was too cold for us and when we get there...

i do not have the photo here because it is frustrating.

we finally decided to just "oh f*ck it lets just go home" and we had our dinner at Panas Indian Restaurant near the ryokan; where my nose started to bleed again.

so what i mostly did today is:

1. ask "where would you like to go next?"

2. suggest some places that we can go if my partners do not know where to go.

3. navigate.

4. translate; especially during shopping; especially if the promoter did not speak English well.

5. rage. because i had headache and i cant breathe well using my nose and i cant really concentrate on navigating using

back in the ryokan one of my partner said that i can just stay here forever and be a tour guide.

well yeah, maybe. just quit my raging job now and stay here and be a tour guide. 

just like what they said and i myself said and everyone said when we were in Seoul back in Oct 2013.

and lesson learnt: proper planning on where do you want to go is still the best.

Japan Day 4: Why Japan?

i finally slept early at 1.00am and woke up early at 7.30am this morning. 

we initially planned to directly go to Tokyo Tower after breakfast. but we were kinda lost and found ourselves at Asakusa Market near Sensoji Temple. youd find a lot of stuff to buy for souvenirs here.

next, we went to find our way to Tokyo Tower but suddenly i spotted a cruise ticket counter and asked my partners if they wanted to get on the cruise and they said yes. so we went on the cruise and we were dropped to Odaiba. 

there we took some photos, walk around and once again, tried to find our way Tokyo Tower and we finally succeeded.

so... why Japan?

the years before we had to vote on which country we wanted to go as it is a company trip. 

that is why, we first went to Bali, Indonesia and the next one is Seoul, Korea.

but this time, we can choose the country that we want to go.

i have seen Japan on TV.

so i just wanted to see Japan with my own eyes.

Japan Day 3: Unexpected Kindness & Whiteness

2 days at Tokyo make me feel bored. i told my travel partners that i really want to go somewhere else.

lets go to Fujiyama tomorrow! now go to sleep! we need to wake up at 5 in the morning and take the earliest train at 6.00am~ thats what i said.

going to sleep early is one of my biggest lie.

i fell asleep at 3.00am while 9gagging and woke up at 6.30am. well i did woke up to my alarm at 5.30am but i snoozed the alarm and my travel partner's alarm went off at 6.00am but she didnt woke up to the alarm and the alarm went snoozing by itself for 3 times and finally she woke up and i woke up and another one of us woke up; shower and head to Fujiyama straight away at 7.30am.

as written in my previous entry, just use google maps. but i actually got some tips from a blog. well it says there that the easiest way to go to Fujiyama from Tokyo is by bus at Shinjuku; and she went for Fujiyama trip with an agent.

but somehow, WE went to Fujiyama by train, by referring to google maps!

however, there are quite a lot of transfers between train stations needed, so you will need to be careful of which station you are heading to.

by counting hours there are route to choose. one is 3 hours +- and another is 8 hours +-.

so guess which route did we take?

4.5 hours.

we initially took the 3 hours route, of course; but we...

got lost;

because of the station transfers.

but luckily, one of the train pilot; wait, do we call the people who drive the train "pilot"?

whatever. the pilot and the station manager (?) were very helpful to guide us on where we wanted to go, even if they are not really fluent in English.

it was very kind of them to ask "doko iku no?" and say "follow me" and showed me the routes or explaining where should we go for example "kaidan (stairs), up, mukou (go further behind)" or "koko (here), matsu (name of  a place), here, same."

so we finally got to the last station named Kawaguchiko; which if you already book for a tour then maybe the tour guide will wait for you there; or you can just go inside and ask for a ticket for sightseeing bus for JPY1200. you can stop at any point of attraction in the map; which is given together with your ticket. when you are done with the particular point of attraction then you can just wait at the bus stop, show the bus pilot driver your ticket and you can just hop on to go to another point of attraction.

we initially wanted to go up to Fujiyama but it was already - unexpectedly for us - snowing outside, so there will be no trip to Fujiyama. sobs.

we went on the sightseeing bus and stopped at a place called Saiko Wild Bird Park but there was nothing to be found there but pure white... and some sculptures; and a small building with no one inside.

yesterday was quite cold enough for us, even for me who always, constantly had the aircond in my room in the office at below 18 Degree Celcius which everyone else complains "it is very cold in here" whenever they come in. note that Malaysia is hot. really.

we were discussing that we wouldnt want to go to a snowy place because it would be too cold; but we ended up playing with the snow instead.

it is our first time seeing snow live in front of our eyes and it was not just snow, it is snowing by the time we arrive.

and seeing how 9gaggers react to snow, and seeing the Dude vs Wild Arctic Edition by Jap-Higa, i was wondering what it would be like to walk in the snow and feel the snow with my bare hand and catching the snow with my tongue and "do you want to build a snowman~?"

slippery! i cant get up! damn it!

and we were like "when is the next bus coming to pick us up~ we're freezing~ (TT_TT)"

well, snow is cool, at first but it gets really annoying when it gets too cold and too thick. it even got into my uggs~ *gasp* im wearing uggs~

put that aside, when we are done playing with the snow, we hopped on the sightseeing bus and the bus driver kept on stopping and asking pedestrians either if they wanted to hop on or where are they heading.

and yes, we had our first help without asking from an old lady at Tawaramachi Station who showed us the way to Taito Ryokan.

Japan day 2: Kabuki & Takeshita Dori

use google maps to get yourselves to anywhere you want. but make sure that you CAN read maps.

i am a gifted map reader. i always scored the highest in Geography during middle school.

ok that doesnt make any sense. 

but.. really.. yeah i did some research on Seoul for our last trip so it is kinda easy for us to go to the places that we i want to go; and we also had a student to guide us.

this time, i didnt do any research and told my travelling partner: just buy air tickets & reserve accommodation. once we reach there, just take whatever brochure and plan for trips on the spot. 

and so... yeah. just use google maps; and you might want to have a copy of subway guide, which you might need to ask from the subway officer for the English/Romaji version.

today... we initially planned to go to Fujiyama and we promised ourselves that we shall get going at 7.30am, but we woke up at 9.30am.

ok so we didnt go to Fujiyama today but we went to see a Kabuki performance at the National Theatre. we were lucky that we reached there just as the performance started at 12 noon. the ticket range is JPY1,500 - 12,000++. 

non Japanese speakers are advised to rent a receiver at JPY700 / pcs with refundable deposit of JPY1000/pcs. we went in quite late and the kabuki performance have already started. it was about a magical sword that brings rain. however, once Act 1 ended i went to return the receiver and...

not much to do in Takeshita Dori anyway, just sight seeing for good sense of fashion. we planned to visit Harajuku one more time during the weekend to look for cosplayers. 

after Takeshita Dori we went back to Ameyayokocho for food (there was a chicken rice shop which a Malaysian celebrity came to eat and the shop owner hang his photo there) and shoes! i mean... uggs!

Japan Day 1: The Ryokan & The Melei Monkeys

i reached KLIA2 at about 9pm, waited for my 2 other friends and we checked in at about 9.45pm. we wait & wait & wait and we finally took off at 00:45am Jan 13, 2015.

we touched down at about 7.30am at Narita International Airport and found our way to Taito Ryokan. it was not hard trying to locate this place, even if S-san from the ryokan offered to pick us up at Tawaramachi Station once we reached.

well i would have called him to pick us up; but we do not have any phone or internet connection.

but lucky for us, there was a map right at the exit of Tawaramachi Station (Ginza Line) and there was a very helpful lady asked,"daijoubu?"

so i said "hai. koko kara, Taito Ryokan, dou?"

well yes, i am not very good at Japanese but at least i can communicate.

a little bit about Taito Ryokan (this might be a special offer for me, but if you need real info please visit the websute). 2700JPY / person / night, regardless any room. have at least 2 showers & 2 toilets; but they are not attached to the private rooms. well, the style is kinda like a typical Japanese home; which i only see in J-Do's and animes.

our first 3 nights is a 6 tatami room - i will tell you the rest later - with a heater and it faces the street.

payment is by JPY cash upon check in; however you will need to give S-san some of your credit card detail to secure the booking and charges will be applied if you were to cancel in the last minute or if you didnt show up on the day you were supposed to check in.

there are free coffee, tea & green tea (self service). hair dryer is in one of the shower and you will need to take them to your room and put them back in the shower after you are done. clothes iron is available upon request. no curfew. check in time is between 3 - 10pm.

so we went to put our bag and started our little journey to Haneda Airport, to rent a wifi thingy; and later we went to Ueno Park because it is said that there are a lot of museum there; however... most of them are closed and we just get to see some street performance; and... wait... i smell something familiar... what is that?

but no... we havent had rice (we're Asians, whataya expect?) since like 4am this morning which we ate Nasi Lemak Pak Nasser by Air Asia X so we went to the local 7E-like store and bought onigiri and we ate and now both of my friends are snoring and i am here writing this using my laptop.

and it is going to be another sleepless night... tonight... i guess... after a sleepless night last night, in the airplane.

why was i sleepless?

Japan Day 0: I Dont Know What The Title Should Be

hey~ you guys~ and girls~ long time no see!

i am currently in Putrajaya and~

i went to volunteer as an RIB driver/rider/whatever for a flood relieve in Temerloh, Pahang.

i have been watching Return of Superman and recently just discovered The Jap Higa - as part of my entertainment world aside from 9Gag.

i downloaded one of my favorite child teenhood anime Cardcaptor Sakura and collegehood anime Honey & Clover. i also downloaded and watched One Piece movies, Naruto movies, Detective Conan movies, Nintama Rantarou live action movies and damn it i dont know where can i get Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends without using torrent.

well i am a noob, i only download from youtube, u dunno how to torrent.

wait.. oh.. it is already on youtube. teehee~

i also discovered Joshi Kousei; which literally means "high school girls" which i thought that it would be a simple, funny and a lil bit exaggerating anime just like Honey & Clover or Ichigo Mashimaro so i downloaded the first 4 episodes and when i dragged the first episode to Media Player Classic and skipped the intro song and a few minutes later oh my God! my eyes! they're burning! my eyes! noooooo!

the blame is on me because of my mindset of "oh this anime is going to be as cute as Itou Chika (left) or Hanamoto Hagumi (right)~"

oh yeah, i downloaded Crows Zero 3 but it doesnt have English subs and my Japanese is not really good so i have not yet watch them because without English subs i need to really concentrate to listen to what the characters are saying and thus i really need to concentrate and plug in my earphone and concentrate but i dont have the time to really concentrate.

i have been to Pasir Gudang (Johor) twice, Kulai (Johor), Paka (Terengganu), Miri (Sarawak), Bintulu (Sarawak), Bayan Lepas (Penang) twice - for work, within these 3 months; thats kinda a lot, really.

i have been working Saturdays and Sundays that i am currently on leave from last Friday and i had this feeling like "oh my god, it has been so long that i havent had a long relaxing weekend".

i encountered a post in 9gag saying not to watch "Requiem for a Dream" 6 times in a week because it would make you feel depressed; but i would say do not start 9gagging or Higa-ing because for me, it made my mind so messed up.

i am still deciding should i or should i not bring my laptop on my vacation because if i do, i would surely go 9gagging or Higa-ing.

Company Trip: I am leaving to Japan end of this year

i am me.

i was sleeping on my left side, facing a glass door of a house and my head on someone's lap.

then suddenly that someone said,"your taxi is here."

i woke up and pack my things, made sure that i have my passport, flight ticket, phone and wallet.

i got on to the taxi and went off somewhere and opened my eyes.

it is 7.50am.

i never had any nice dreams lately.

i cant wait to go to Japan at the end of this year.
